Evening discussion with Professor József Pálinkás

Evening discussion with Professor József Pálinkás

On the 26th of March, an otherwise unseasonably warm early-spring evening, the Hungarian LSE Alumni Association hosted Professor József Pálinkás, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the prestigious venue, Ybl Palace, located in the heart of Budapest. The event, which was also attended by members of our partner organisations (Oxbridge Alumni; Milestone Institute; Harvard Club of Hungary), was without doubt a great success.

This occassion was a genuinely memorable one, as it also marked the unveiling of our brand new webpage. Our guest, Professor Pálinkás honoured us by participating in the launch of the website by taking the first official 'click' on our site.

Subsequently, he delivered his insightful talk, titled: Hungarian Science: The success scenario. In his lecture he mainly focused on the work carried out during his tenure as President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He demonstrated the renewal process with a meticulously detailed presentation, highlighting the main focus points of the efforts to revamp the institution. Also, he talked about the organic and inorganic changes carried out under his auspices. For example, he mentioned the restructuring of the research institution network, or the newly established grants system.

In line with our traditions, the talk was followed by a lively Q&A session, in which Professor Pálinkás touched upon a wide variety of issues, citing poignant examples and figures to underline his points. Furthermore, he even shared with us a glimpse into the unquestionably smart humour of physicists.
