On the 3rd of December 2014 the Hungarian LSE Alumni Association - together with the International Circle - organised a hotly anticipated evening discussion with former Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr János Martonyi. Living up to the expectations, the lavishly decorated main auditorium of the renowned Fasori Secondary School filled up with LSE alumni, members of the International Circle and with our friends and invitees.
In his talk, titled 'Hungarian foreign policy in the 21th century', Mr. Martonyi shared his thougths on the labyinthine foreign policy landscape of the late-20th and early-21th century. Nuanced and sagacious as always, Mr Martonyi introduced us into the very complex foreign policy context a mid-sized country like Hungary has to navigate. Through his words a profound understanding of the geopolitical and historical backdrop of Hungarian foreign policy was more than evident. Later during the Q&A session, Mr Martonyi answered questions on a variety of issues, like hegemony and the widely celebrated recent work of (LSE graduate) Thomas Piketty. Mr Martonyi's answers were prudent and poignant, showing that his decades of service in the forefront of Hungarian foreign policy endowed him with gravitas few can match.
